Kerry Safari part 2

The end of the last bulletin looked forward to two days of good flying to round off the safari. We weren’t disappointed,  with Thursday proving to be great day on Fermoyle. It was clear and mostly sunny, hardly anyone on the beach,  and best of all no high tide until well after sunset. There was good flying on the home ridge, flights up to the Connor Pass, and – for the first time? – two gliders did the circuit around…

OLC Championship Ireland

Probably un-noticed by most if not all of us the 2020 OLC season is history. Certainly historic given everthing that was thrown at us. Only 10 pilots posted scoring flights – less than half of the numbers of recent years and only one of those managed to fill all 6 available slots. The thing about a competition is that it’s the same for everyone – same weather, same task, same rules, same problems. Although OLC rules allow you to go…

Kerry Safari

A summary of the Kerry Safari, written by Peter Denman We are midway through week two of what is a rather different Kerry fortnight. Because of the pandemic precautions in force, a number of the usual suspects and potential first-timers either couldn’t, or decided not to, take part, so we are at most a dozen here this year. But what about the flying? Just three days in the air so far. The first Monday we had excellent flying at Fermoyle…

Dublin Gliding Club is back flying

The good news is that we are back flying again since June 29th. It was announced by the Government that, from June 29th, all sporting activities, including contact sports, may resume as well as hairdressers and barbers. In view of this relaxing of restrictions, the IGSA no longer advises against dual flying provided steps are taken to protect the pilots and minimise potential exposure. The priority for now is to get all our instructors, tug pilots and solo pilots back…

Condor Online Game

On Saturday, Michael Shannon hosted a club online Condor competition. This was a teaser event to test out our connections and any possible failures. We got off to a bad start with several restarts required to the server but eventually 4 eager glider pilots connected. Colin King bravely shared his screen via Zoom to several online lookers who did not have Condor ready yet. You could say that Colin did very well in a single seater Sirrus with 4 back…

A new year 2020 and a recap of 2019

Luckily enough Wednesday 1st January 2020 was flyable, and Peter Moskovits took to the sky with the first flight of 2020. Congratulations to Colin King on his 300k in Australia. This distance was achieved on January 5th, 2019. Feb 5th, Dublin Gliding Club…

Owen Grogan LS1 Flight

A big congratulations to Owen Grogan who took a first flight in his LS1 today. Owen purchased his LS1 earlier this year and has spent many months preparing his glider for its Irish maiden flight. The weather conditions have not been very favorable to Owen over the last couple of months. However, today had light northerly winds and sunshine creating the perfect day to launch. Well done Owen.
